Power Outage Preparation

Most people know the importance of having a Go Bag ready for evacuation emergencies, but have you considered putting together a Stay Bag and preparing your home for winter power outages? As they become more frequent all over California, not just in the higher elevation counties, it is imperative for all residents to have at least two weeks of supplies stocked up for every member of their household. Along with personal necessities, several household items are vital for survival and comfort in a prolonged winter power outage.

Thinking ahead is the key to staying safe and comfortable in any emergency. To help make sure you and your family are protected against freezing temperatures we have put together a short preparation to-do list for you:

  • Take inventory of food and water supplies to make sure you have enough for each person for two weeks
  • If you have a well, stock extra water for bathing and flushing
  • Collect rainwater or melt snow for flushing water only (keep in mind it is not potable or safe to bathe with)
  • If you have an electric stove, find a safe alternative indoor cooking method that won’t lead to carbon monoxide poisoning
  • Get refills and/or extra prescription medication if needed
  • Replaced standard window curtains with insulated drapes (or emergency blankets for a cheaper option)
  • Put together a stock of common supplies such as candles, flashlights, batteries, chargers, and emergency blankets

Solar Battery Backup

Having a reliable power backup, like a solar energy system with a battery, can relieve the stress of dealing with unstable power supplies. However, you will need to make sure that your system has off-grid and backup capabilities. If you are interested in learning more about going solar or adding a battery to your existing system, our solar experts can help you find the best solution for your home’s energy consumption!

Attic Insulation

In addition to stocking up on supplies, making sure your home stays warm is literally a life-or-death situation. Even if you have a home generator powerful enough to run your heater, your home’s attic insulation will make or break your family’s comfort. To prevent heat from escaping, check your home’s attic insulation for any moisture or pest damage. If you do notice signs of damage, we can help!
