Meet Tom Campbell
Tom Campbell came to Byers in 2015 after a successful career in retail management. Asked about the change, Tom explained the gradual process that led to a new direction.
“I had gotten to know Maria and Ray Byers Sr. and began to see how Byers was run as a family business, and what an extraordinary company Byers is. Meanwhile, each year I was watching bureaucracy grow in retail, with profits being shaved by online sales and less resources available to help my customers. I had experienced what it was like when big companies dissolve or shift ownership. I was looking for a significant change and wanted to find the last company I would ever work for, and dedicate myself fully to that enterprise.”
Tom began his work with Byers as a LeafGuard Estimator in the North Bay, where Byers had a specific need in 2015. Tom added all product lines to his estimating expertise over time and now is predominately locally based, which is an important factor in Tom’s work-life balance.
“I now work to enjoy each day and help my clients, not worry about the next promotion or corporate reorganization. I don’t need to be concerned about upper management or ownership changes. There is a real, tangible stability to a family company that is truly unique.
For the first time in my life, I have no interest in doing anything different than what I’m doing — work-life balance is tremendously important and Byers has given me the opportunity to explore this.
This family is so supportive and our clients are incredible. Meeting interesting people every day, and helping them, is very satisfying. When I knock on the front door, many of our clients already know so much about us. I never feel like I’m starting cold because people have already heard good things about Byers.”
Tom and his wife Rhonda are exploring being empty nesters, with both daughters grown and away at college. The two met in Chico, were married in 1996 and lived in the Bay Area before coming to Nevada County in 2003. Many people know Rhonda Campbell from her work at Sierra Nevada Hospital as a Radiology Technologist, working predominately with Mammography.
When daughters Paige and Sienna were home, the house was filled with their many friends.
“Today, we spend quite a bit of time doing home improvement and landscaping projects on our ‘forever home’ in Penn Valley. One of the things that motivated me to come to Nevada County was the ability to have land. We are definitely plant junkies—landscaping is a big hobby and we have about 3 of our 10 acres landscaped. We love where we live—the climate, land, and great people here in Nevada County. We participate in the local community as much as possible. I look to the total picture of how I want my life to be — where I live, how I live and who I work for is all connected and very rewarding. There is balance between work, chores and play.”
Tom and Rhonda enjoy being outdoors, camping, boating, kayaking and mountain biking. After 15 years here, they feel like they still have so much to explore in this area — from cool river spots, scenic trails, to quaint little restaurants scattered throughout Nevada and surrounding counties.
Asking for a few thoughts on his work at Byers, Campbell sums it up:
“I thought there would be benefits to working for a family company. I didn’t realize that it would be so significant that I actually feel part of the family. I’ve never seen less competition and strife in any business that I’ve ever been associated with. I am grateful to be part of this team.”
