5 New Year’s Resolutions for Your Home

Jan 06, 2019

The New Year is here! When thinking about the New Year it often brings up thoughts about fresh starts and clean slates! Many people set New Year’s resolutions for many aspects of their life. Why not set some resolutions for your home this year? Here are our 5 New Year’s Resolutions for your home.

Clean out the Clutter

After the holiday seasons, you may find yourself with a mountain of new things and nowhere to put them. Clutter can make your home feel small and messy so we recommend setting the resolution of going through a room in your house every month and seeing if there are any items that you haven’t used during this last year. If it is like new you may want to consider reselling it. If it’s gently used, donate it. Is the item worn out or broken toss it!

Create a Weekly Cleaning Routine

Since we’re talking about cleaning it’s also a good idea to set up a weekly cleaning routine. There are many ways to create a weekly cleaning list, some chose to pick an activity every day. You could do all the dusting on Mondays, vacuuming on Tuesdays, etc. Daily chores include doing the dishes, putting dirty clothes in the laundry basket, hanging up coats and putting everything back in its place.

Organize your rubber gloves and cleaning products by putting them in a small caddy that you can carry from room to room. Minimize your cleaning sprays and recycle empty bottles. Staying on top of maintaining a clean household and keeping everything organized will help keep your home feeling fresh and will be less stressful than letting it all pile-up.

Make Your House Safe and Sound

Now that your home looks clean and organized it’s a good time to check the safety of your home. Make sure you have fire detectors in every room and replace the batteries if needed. You can also check your house for gases like radon and carbon monoxide. You can purchase detectors for these as well. Let your house breathe, having a properly ventilated house can help with the air quality of your home.

Other safety measures you can take are installing door and window alarms and security cameras. Most of these alarms have a range of cost, can connect to your smartphone and can be installed very quickly and easily.

Cut Down on Energy Use

Going green is helpful to the environment and can also be helpful to your pocketbook! Start with easy steps like recycling often, turning off the lights when you leave the room, switching to LED bulbs and remembering your reusable grocery bags!

Are you looking to take bigger steps in reducing your footprint? Think about sealing and insulating your ductwork. This will extend the life of your heat pump, furnace, and air conditioning, making your home more comfortable and increase your heating and cooling system by 20%.

Looking for even bigger steps? Choose solar! 2019 is the last year for the best Solar Tax Rebate over the two years the rebate is going to drop by 20% where it will stay permanently. Installing solar can increase the value of your home as well as save you money on your electricity bills.

Open Your House to Guests

A house isn’t a home without the people that gather there. A common New Year’s Resolution is to spend more time with family and friends. Create a welcoming home and invite people to stay over. Take a look at the rooms where people gather most and make small changes. Bring in new pillows to the couch to make it extra comfortable, add a few floor cushions to act as footrests and extra seating, purchase a rug or get your current one professionally cleaned so your guests can kick off their shoes and stay awhile. Update your guest room with small personal touches like travel sized items in the bathroom and a little coffee bar setup. These small additions will make your guests feel comfortable so you can focus on creating lasting memories together.
